Golden Valley Christian Church

There is no way of getting around the fact that wars are horrible.  The Vietnam war was especially brutal, with the Vietnamese military refusing to honor the “Geneva Convention,” a guide to how prisoners of war were treated.  Admiral James B Stockdale, a navy pilot, was shot down over North Vietnam.  Landing on the streets of a small village, the villagers ascended on him, tearing his clothes off, beating him mercilessly, breaking one of his legs, until the Vietnam military police took him.  Admiral Stockdale was taken to the infamous “Hanoi Hilton,” where the beatings and torture continued.  When promised that his treatment would be better if he denounced the United States, Stockdale refused.  He became an example to the other prisoners.  Jesus, our example, was also beaten and tortured (Matt 20:8-19).

Don’t forget, this Sunday, September 16th, is “Back-to-Church” Sunday.  Let’s meet the attendance goal and see what surprise Bro Tim has in store for us.  The evening of September 23rd, the youth group will resume meeting at 5:45 PM, and there will also be an adult study of the book of Jeremiah, at 6:00 PM.

Bro Tim’s message, with scripture from John 1:35-51, focused on the words used in the calling of Jesus’ first disciples.  Jesus said to two of them, “Come and see,” and they went with Him and spent a day.  What would it be like to spend a day with Jesus?  Andrew told Peter, “We have found the Messiah.”  Nathanael asked, “Nazareth? Can anything good come from there?”  But when he met Jesus, he believed.  Like the Biblical disciples, as Christians, we should also go and tell.

The Bible challenge question:  Who did King Herod think Jesus was? (Matt 14:1-2)
