Two hundred forty-two years ago, on July 2nd, delegates from the original thirteen states voted for the Declaration of Independence from England.  July 4th, 1776, the day our nation celebrates today as Independence Day, was the publication of that event.  During that period of time, not all Americans wanted independence from England.  Even some of the states’ delegates to that meeting would not vote for the declaration.  One Delaware delegate, Caesar Rodney, rode eighty miles by horseback to break the deadlock of that delegation, to make the vote unanimous for all thirteen states.  The dates of the actual signing of all of the fifty-six delegates is not known, but the signing started August 2, 1776.  Signing the Declaration of Independence was a serious and dangerous thing for these brave men.  King George ordered his soldiers to find and execute the signers of this document.  Many lost their lives, their homes, and their fortunes.  Americans today need to be remindful of how these true patriots brought forth our nation.

Last Sunday we were blessed with a men’s trio of Bro Tim, Bob Fenwick, and Ken Jones.  They did a great job, singing “When We All Get to Heaven,” much to the pleasure of the congregation.  Bro Tim read some inspiring patriotic poems, written by our friend, Trish Myers Graham.  This coming Sunday, Kevin Brown, from Central Christian College of the Bible, will provide an update of CCCB, and an accompanying student will share a message from God’s Word.

Ephesians 6:10-20 was the scripture of Bro Tim’s message, “Wise Preparations.”  This scripture tells Christians how to remain strong and true in the Lord.  The Apostle Paul tells us to put on the full armor of God, which is the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.  Paul told of the conflict he had had in his life.  We should all pray that each one of us will always be strong in the Lord.

The Bible challenge question:  What was Jesus’ answer to the question, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” (Matt 9:11-12)
