Anyone learning English as a second language can find it a trying process.  Many words, spoken alike, have different meanings (e.g. there and their).  Another phrase that would bewilder new learners is an oxymoron, a figure of speech in which contradictory terms appear side by side (e.g. “a cheerful pessimist,” or “an exact estimate”).  The scriptures also seem to have terms that can be misunderstood.  An example can be found in Proverbs of the King James Version that says, “he that putteth his trust in the Lord shall be made fat.”  For people today, that sounds strange, knowing it is not God’s purpose to make anyone fat.  In Biblical days, “fat” was considered prosperity (Gen 45:17-20), therefore, in a newer Bible, that verse says “he who trusts in the Lord will prosper.”  (Proverbs 28:25 NASB)

The GVCC congregation sends congratulations and best wishes to Bob and Jo Ann (Snider) Fenwick.  Bob and Jo Ann were married in a beautiful ceremony last Saturday.  The church was overflowing with family and friends, all wishing the couple a happy life.

Last Sunday, GVCC recognized the fathers in the church.  Three fathers received gift cards in a drawing.  Bro Tim’s message, “A Good Dad,” using scripture from Matthew 1:18-20.  Bro Tim reminded us of the situation Joseph was in when he knew Mary was expecting a child.  He was a good man, and did not want to hurt Mary, so he planned to divorce her quietly.  We know God intervened, and Joseph, who was a righteous man, took Mary as his wife and became a good earthly father to Jesus.  There were examples of many “good dads” in the scriptures.  We should all remember that every Christian has a father in common, because we are all God’s children.
