Most Missourians are aware that Missouri is known as the “Show-Me State.”  How many know where that phrase came from?  In 1899, Willard Duncan Vandiver was one of the congressmen from this state.  In a speech in Philadelphia, among his remarks was, “. . . frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me.  I am from Missouri.  You have got to show me.”  It is not certain that Congressman Vandiver was the first to use this phrase, but it was this speech that embraced it.  Missouri’s motto is “Let the good of the people be the supreme law.”  The Bible is full of phrases that are still used very frequently today.  Two such phrases are “a drop in a bucket” (Isaiah 40:15) and “wits’ end” (Psalms 107:27).

Praise our Lord, the GVCC Sunday attendance rivaled our Easter attendance, and God gave us a beautiful morning to worship our Creator.  Mother’s Day will soon be here, and Bro Tim hinted of some special activities for that day.  So, ladies, mark your calendar to be here and see what Bro Tim has up his sleeve.  Once again, GVCC will be donating beans to our Christian Service Camp near La Monte, Missouri.  The request is for beans in BIG cans; opening dozens of small cans can be tiring and time-consuming, so let’s see how many big cans we can collect.  If you don’t have access to the big cans, there is a basket for donations, and we will do the shopping for you.

“What We’re to Do,” with scripture from Luke 15:1ff, was the title of Bro Tim’s message.  As Christians, we are commanded to spread the good news of Jesus.  Bro Tim used three parables in the Bible, illustrating the “lost and found.”  He used the parable of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son.  Each was an illustration of how we are to seek those who do not know or understand the “Good News” and how a reward will be awaiting us.  This is a commandment from Jesus (Matt 28:19-20).

The Bible challenge question:  Name the only woman recorded in the Bible to have had a dream. (Matt 27:19)
