Golden Valley Christian Church

We celebrated Mother’s Day last Sunday, and there are some interesting facts about that date. Although Mother’s Day, or a similar day, had been observed by some societies for centuries, it was not an official U.S. holiday until 1914, due to the efforts of a lady named Ann Jarvis.  In memory of her own deceased mother, Ann campaigned to make the second Sunday in May a holiday to honor all mothers. Finally, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation for this to happen.  As this day became more popular, the greeting card industry and other corporations turned the event into a profit-making time.  This upset Jarvis to the point of boycotting the day.  Jarvis wanted this day to honor mothers, not for businesses to make a profit.  There are probably more cards sent and more telephone calls made on this day than any other day of the year.

Vacation Bible School will soon be here.  Our VBS director, Melynne Jones, asks each person who is donating supplies, to please bring them to the church building by this Sunday, May 20th.  The congregation is still collecting cans of beans for West Central Christian Service Camp, through the end of May.

During our worship service, Deena Rosado did a wonderful job of reading an article written by Erma Bombeck, “A Tribute to God’s Greatest Creation—Mothers.”  Each mother received a beautiful wave petunia in remembrance of the day.  Bro Tim’s message was “What a Mother Will Do,” with scripture from Matthew 20:20-23.  In these scriptures, the mother of James and John, the Apostles, asked Jesus if her sons could sit by His side in His Kingdom.  This was a mother who wanted the very best for her sons.  Mothers should want the best for their children, praying for them, being involved with them, and having great expectations for them.  Jesus has a love that sacrifices over many times. Mothers also have that kind of love.  Jesus passed through the valley of death so that those who believe in Him would not have to do so.
