Golden Valley Christian Church
Although some people have called Jesus the "Rose of Sharon," and sing it in songs, the Bible never uses these words to refer to Jesus. This phrase is only found in one place in the entire Bible (Song of Songs 2:1), and that passage refers to a female. "Sharon" is a very consistent, fertile plain in Palestine that was home to many beautiful flowers and was even referred to in the New Testament (Acts 9:35). Since roses are uncommon in Palestine, it is thought the rose was actually a cistus (also known as the rock-rose), known for its pain-relieving qualities. Because of these definitions, it seems perfectly proper to equate Jesus with the rose of Sharon: Jesus is beautifully consistent, and He came to heal, physically and spiritually.
Last Sunday morning, Georgia Randall blessed us with a beautiful medley of familiar hymns before Bro. Tim's sermon, "A Kingdom Torn in Two." Because Solomon had not kept the Lord's covenant, God promised the kingdom would be torn away from Solomon's family, but not during Solomon's reign. After Solomon's death, his son, Rehoboam, became king. Ignoring the advice of the elders of the assembly to lighten the harsh labor and heavy yoke put upon the people, Rehoboam listened to the younger men, making things even worse. The nation of Israel split in two, with ten tribes rebelling, to follow the rule of Jeroboam, an adversary of Solomon. It would be advantageous for all of us to remember that God does keep His promises. We may get by with sinning for awhile, but it will catch up with us in the end.
