Myths have a way of turning non-factual stories into legends that are believed; so it is, with the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In all probability, most of us have heard the story of Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicking a lantern over, causing the fire. That horrific fire started on October 8th, near a barn on the property of Patrick and Catherine O’Leary, burning for two days, until a gentle rain helped extinguish it. The O’Learys were Irish, and the Irish were disliked in that time period. The reporter, Michael Ahern, who wrote the article accusing Mrs. O’Leary’s cow, later admitted he made up the story. But the damage had been done, and the myth started growing. The real reason for the fire is not known. However, Chicago was experiencing a drought, and with the wooden structures of that day, a spark grew into a massive fire. Fire can destroy, or it can be a purifier (Matt 3:11-12).

There are a number of activities going on at GVCC. There are two mid-week home Bible studies on the book of James, and a study of Jeremiah is at the church building on Sunday evenings. There is a youth meeting at the church building on Sunday evenings, as well. We are collecting items for Operation Christmas Child, and dry egg noodles for Project Christmas Cheer.

Last Sunday, Jace Smothers, a freshman student from Ozark Christian College, brought the message in the absence of Bro Tim. Jace told us that while he was growing up, he did not believe in God. When he was in high school, he was devastated to learn that his mother had a brain tumor. One day, after winning a football game, his coach asked to pray with him, knowing about Jace’s struggles. With that prayer, he felt at peace, and desired to learn more about God. His mother recovered, and after high school, he enrolled in Ozark Christian College.
