We just observed Columbus Day, set aside by Congress and President Franklin Roosevelt, as a federal holiday in 1934.  The original date was October 12th, but in 1971, the official holiday was changed to the second Monday in October.  We were taught in school that Christopher Columbus was the first European to discover the Americas.  However, a Viking, Leif Eriksson, may well have been the first European to discover this new world.  There is evidence that he set up a colony in Newfoundland five hundred years before Columbus arrived.  There are ten official holidays in the United States.  Biblical people also honored holidays; the most famous is Passover.  Jesus celebrated this holiday, with what we call the “Last Supper,” before His death (Matt 26:17-19; Mk 12:12-15; Luke 22:7-10). Christians celebrate the Lord’s Supper regularly to remember Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.

Many thanks go to Rosanna, playing the piano, and Georgia, leading the song service last Sunday, in the absence of our regular music leaders, Ken and Marla Jones.  The congregation was so blessed in the morning worship with a most unusual and different kind of special.  Victoria Gregory did a beautiful job of interpretive sign language on the song, “Holy Spirit.”  If you watched her graceful movements, you could connect them with the words.

Brother Tim’s message came from the third chapter of James, entitled “Words or Wisdom.” One of the most dangerous of human tools, and very powerful, is the tongue.  A powerful horse can be controlled with a bit in its mouth, and a large ship is steered by a small rudder.  Words that are not controlled can hurt or, if controlled, can encourage.  Sometimes, our words seem to take on a life of their own.  We need to learn to control the tongue (James 1:19).  We also have earthly wisdom and heavenly wisdom; we need to understand the difference.  God sent Jesus to the cross so we might all be saved through His sacrifice.

The Bible challenge question:  With God’s help, Moses divided the Red Sea; who divided the Jordan river? (2 Kings 2:7-8)
